Southwestern Pork Sausage

Southwestern Pork Sausage

Ahhhh, foods of the southwest.  The southwest is a land of contrasts and similarities that provides us a pallete of foods unequaled by many other regions of the United States.  Southwestern food consists of cooking methods and flavors that are a blend of American Indian, colonial Spanish, American Settler and the proud people of Mexico.  Southwestern food promises a tasteful variety of recipes that once hooked, you are not easily pulled away.  Smells of roasted chile’s, wood smoke and sizzling meats are what come to mind when thinking of the foods of the southwest.

Southwestern Pork Sausage

One of my favorite foods that I yearn for as we leave winter behind and welcome spring is Southwestern Pork Sausage.  While I am from the land of brats and beer, I cannot pass up a grilled Southwestern pork sausage served on a freshly baked roll, topped with roasted peppers and onions. (more…)

Creamy Tomato Soup - A Great Way To Save Those Extra Tomatoes

Sunday, April 5th, 2009 by theidel

Every year after you have had your tomato canning weekend, the stragglers inevitably start to roll in.  These are the extra tomatoes that weren’t quite ready to be picked or are being offered to you by friends and family.  Typically you have made your salsa, stewed tomatoes and spaghetti sauce and you really can’t get your motivation ramped up again to do more canning so soon.  If you are like me, you hate the idea of all this great food going to waste.  What do you do with them?  Here is an easy way to save extra tomatoes without dragging out all that canning gear again.

Creamy Tomato Soup Mix

This is a great recipe that takes those extra tomatoes from the fall harvest and turns them into a easy to prepare creamy tomato soup mix that can be given away as gifts or saved for those blustery winter days. (more…)

Sausage-Making and Politics Don’t Go Together

Saturday, April 4th, 2009 by theidel

I am going to go on a little rant here.  Recently there have been numerous news articles referring to politics and sausage-making in basically the same sentence.   In fact, if you search Google for “political + sausages” there are 59 recent articles making the connection between the two.  The connection was first suggested in a quote by Otto Bismarck, “Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them made“.  Mr. Bismarck was a very educated and influential leader in Germany during the later part of the 19th century, also known as the “Iron Chancellor”.  He should have known better to denigrate “the great sausage”.

Giving Sausages a Bad Name

In my book, sausages never hurt anyone.  It is my belief that using sausage in the same sentence or conversation with politics or politicians, is no different than connecting sausages to lawyers, used car dealers, loan originators or AIG executives.  It doesn’t make any sense and it’s mean spirited.

Sausage and Politics are not the same

The sausage and the art of sausage-making stands for everything that politics and politicians do not:

  • Sausage-making stands for not wasting “pork” or even beef, chicken, venison or many other meats.
  • Sausage is wonderful, delicious and does not offend anyone. (Except PETA)
  • Sausage is truly multi-cultural and inclusive.
  • The art of making sausage and its end result provides sustenance and joy to the masses.

Because of this slanderous and irresponsible association, we at Home Food Gourmet have started an online petition to restore the good name of Sausage and the Sausage-Maker.

Take a few minutes to visit the petition at this link:  Leave the Sausage Alone Petition

Is preserving your food necessary? For some it is.

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 by theidel

Most of the posts on Home Food Gourmet are about the hobby of preserving food as in canning, dehydrating, fermenting, curing & smoking and freezing.  While for most of us preserving food is a hobby, for others it is an economical way to save money and have healthy food year round.  Some of us like gardening to get that sense of satisfaction of doing it yourself and getting good produce.  For others it is about putting food on the table.  The economy and environmental factors may cause some to switch from the hobby side to the putting food on the table side.

It’s not news to anyone that our economy has taken a nosedive into the curb.  For the over 90% that are still employed simple things like being able to put food on the table is not yet an issue. For many of the others that is not the case.  Having access to a garden can mean the difference of having vegetables for the kids or not.  Having a garden can generate a tremendous amount of fresh produce that can save money.  Money that can be used for other things such as meat, gas, clothes, medical expense and others.

It’s no surprise that internet searches for topics such as gardening, canning, preserving food, home food preservation, dehydrating and dehydrators is up 40% or more over last year at the same time.  Many people are looking at preserving food as a means of subsistence rather than a hobby. (more…)
